New Fusion innovator (and Berklee grad) Hiromi tackles an album of standards, but in a decidedly nonstandard way. How about “Softly as in a Morning Sunrise” with a fat backbeat and even fatter electric guitar solo? “Claire de Lune” recast for a swinging electric trio? “Caravan” as a guitar-and-percussion orgy? You get the idea. On her prior four albums, Hiromi has established herself as one of the most compelling and imaginative young fusion players in jazz. “Beyond Standard” puts an exponent on her reputation.
